Organic Mattress – Worth the Money?

In one word…YES!!

Buying an organic crib mattress is my #1 happiest baby purchase (we now have 4 of these mattresses).  Babies sleep at least 14-17+ hours a day on them so it’s important that they are not breathing in chemicals during that time, details below.

Conventional mattresses are made from polyurethane foam and polyester (made from petroleum products that emit toxic fumes known to cause serious allergies and problems in immune and reproductive systems), also made of toluene diisocyanate and formaldehyde (carcinogens and irritants to the eyes and skin).  These mattresses have the same combustion rating as kerosene and therefore need to be covered in flame retardants which contain polybromiated diphenyl, which can cause irreversible damage to nervous systems and brain development (in the process of being banned in US, but is not yet banned).  Some research has been done that links SIDS to breathing in the chemicals from conventional mattresses.

Organic mattresses are made from natural foam rubber, organic cotton, wool, and silk.  They contain no petrochemicals so do not emit toxic chemicals and wool is a natural flame retardant so no chemical fireproofing is necessary.

I’m not going to sugar coat it, they do cost a LOT more (somewhere around $250) , but if you are open to it then you can check craigslist/FB yardsales for a used one.  Two of ours are used and they are just as good, in fact, they looked practically new when we got them (and we got one for $50 and the other for $100).  Here is my thought, and yes I know this is totally stereotyping, but if this is important enough for someone to spend that much money on a mattress then they are probably pretty clean, non-smokers, etc. because that type of thing is important to them.  Again, I know…total judgement and of course not necessarily correct.

There are a few great organic mattresses out there, but I personally really like Naturepedic because it’s a great product, made in the USA, and they have fantastic customer service!  We currently have 4 Naturepedic crib mattresses (crib mattresses also fit toddler beds fyi), mattress protectors, and their organic pillows so clearly we like their products!  If you’re interested you can read more out the specific brand on their website: Naturepedic.
